Like many long time residents of Shreveport-Bossier, nestled in the heart of Louisiana, I sometimes overlook or take for granted the plethora of opportunities for fun and adventure for families with kids of all ages. I was perusing the comments in one of my favorite facebook groups "Girls Run the World" and noted that several of the moms were looking for ways to spend quality time and have fun with their little ones. I decided to see what I could find. I was amazed at how much fun and adventure is packed into the Shreveport Bossier area. This article is Part One on my series of things to do with children in SBC
From engaging museums and exciting outdoor parks to educational experiences that are as fun as they are informative, we have an array of family-friendly activities that will keep everyone entertained. Whether you're looking for a weekend getaway or planning a family vacation, Shreveport-Bossier offers a unique blend of Southern charm and modern attractions that are sure to create lasting memories for your family.
Let's start with one of the attractions that made a splash a few years ago when it opened. As an avid scuba diver, I love the opportunity to visit with our finned friends without putting on my wetsuit. The Shreveport Aquarium is an underwater world of wonder that invites families to dive into the depths of the ocean. With thousands of sea creatures, interactive touch pools, and immersive exhibits, it's an ideal place for curious minds to explore the mysteries of aquatic life. Not only will children and their parents be fascinated by the colorful marine animals, but they'll also learn about conservation and the importance of protecting our planet's fragile ecosystems. For those seeking a walk on the wild side, Gators and Friends Adventure Park offers an unforgettable experience with Louisiana wildlife. Gators and Friends has been a staple of "Things to do with Kids" for years. This family-friendly destination features up-close encounters with alligators, a petting zoo, and adrenaline-pumping zip lines that soar over the alligator ponds. It's an ideal spot for adventure lovers and animal enthusiasts alike to connect with nature and experience the thrill of wildlife up close. To plan your visit and check out the various attractions, head to the Gators and Friends Adventure Park website.
In keeping with our wildlife theme, don't forget Chimp Haven. Even though it isn't open to the public at all times, there are opportunities for private tours and special events. Chimp Haven provides sancturary for about 300 chimps in 200 acres of land. These chimps were previously used in biomedical research. At Chimp Haven they get to be just chimps. This is a one of a kind opportunity to learn about these chimps and how you and your littles can help them.
